When shipping Internationally, you will notice during the Commercial Invoice process, you are asked to provide an HS / Commodity Code.
So, what is an HS / Commodity Code?
HS is short for Harmonized System. The Harmonized System is a standardized numerical method of classifying traded products. It is used by customs authorities around the world to identify products when assessing duties and taxes and for gathering statistics.
Here is a step-by-step guide to finding & entering your HS / Commodity Code on ShipSimple:
On the ShipSimple Platform, we have added a handy Search feature, to assist you in determining the correct HS Code to enter. When using this feature, you will be sent to the Canada Post website in a separate browser window. Here you will be able to determine what the code is for the specific item(s) you are shipping. This is what you will see:
Step #1: Enter the Item Description, then click Find.
Step #2: Follow the prompts to narrow down your search.
Once you have narrowed down the search, you will be provided with the HS / Commodity Code. See below for an example:
Step #3: Copy & Paste the 6+ digit HS / Commodity Code to the ShipSimple platform, as seen below:
If your shipment contains more than one item, you will need to select the
"Add Another Item" button and repeat the previous steps.
Once all items are entered, you're all set to click next. The next steps are to enter the shipment dimensions, view courier rates, and purchase a label!
